NYFW: Shows + What I Wore

NYFW: Shows + What I Wore

This year, during New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 19, I tried to keep my schedule manageable by choosing to attend only one or two events per day. I picked the designers that I’m currently coveting and decided to finish satisfying my sartorial thirst by seeing what other fashion houses presented through the lens of my colleagues (a.k.a. Instagram stories).

I had also gone into the week wanting to achieve two takeaways: 1) gain industry knowledge that I could later use for crafting style stories 2) share this first-look experience and information from inside the shows with my community instantly (you can watch a recap of my Instagram stories, here).

In order to focus on these deliverables, I decided to let my personal street style take a back seat. I worried less about what I was wearing each day and prioritized the capture of what’s to come in fashion instead.

Just in case you’re not swept up in the blogger bubble, let me explain why this may sound like a missed opportunity to the ‘norm” of the fashion flock. Getting included in a street style round-up that an online publication produces, like Elle.com for example, is a major moment for a style star. The clip can be saved in your media kit or shared on social media for validation accreditation.

I’m not saying that I haven’t been guilty of peacocking around in front of photographers before – because I too have asked a driver to stop a block away from the show so that I could strut up the entrance with all the bulbs flashing – but, it just wasn’t where my head was at… this year.

To make a long story short; below, you’re going to see less street style from me during this season of NYFW and more of the themes from the upcoming collections. I’m not sure of how you operate but, for me, knowing what trends to expect later assists me in plotting out my wardrobe and personal style for the year. That said, this was the value that I wanted to bring to you. I hope you enjoy the first in this three-part series!

7:00 pm – Jordache FW19 Presentation

I love a revival of a casual classic and was pumped to hear that Jordache is bringing denim on denim back. The All-American brand is also celebrating the western movement that’s galloping across the globe.

10:00 am – Layfette 148 FW19 Presentation

Again, I did a little switch up during this NYFW and went mostly to presentations. I prefer these overs shows since they’re more intimate.

Plus, during a fashion presentation, you can have in-depth conversations about the collections with representatives and often get a chance to touch the fabrics. I live for feeling different textures, so at the Layfette 148 presentation, I was in heaven since there was an abundance of rich feels – that I found out where made in a sustainability-conscious facility.

02.07.19 – The First Official Day of New York Fashion Week

11:00 am – BLDWN FW19 Presentation

Before kicking-off the first official day of gowns floating down runways and late-night sips of spicy margaritas at evening parties, I attended a morning presentation.

BLDWN, another American fashion house, makes modern ready-to-wear for both men and women. Their style of dress is rooted in the timeless qualities of the past, yet is innovative enough to push things forward through fresh design.

Here’s a quick glimpse of what the inside of a presentation really looks like…

it’s a bunch of models standing around with media circling, chatting, and capturing highlights from the collection.

I kept it downtown casual for my morning start with this hoodie, a boot tucked trouser, and longline leather jacket by Yona New York.

Later, for a show uptown, I kept the boots but ditched the hoodie. I also went with black, high-waisted pants and an ivory turtleneck. To add a pattern pop, I topped with a check blazer.

Opting for more warmth while bouncing around between evening events, I did one last outfit change by swapping out the blazer and entrusting my favorite faux fur jacket to fight the frigid winter temps. This final look took me to the French Collection fall/winter preview around 7pm and lastly to the ReBag party with Daily Front Row around 9pm. It was a long but incredbile day.

To catch an early eyeful of the 70s vibes coming out later in the year, check out this blog post by French Connection.

4:00 pm – Pamella Roland FW19 Show

You can always count on one thing during New York Fashion Week and that’s to have your breath taken away by Pamella Roland.

Her signature silhouettes and attention to detail set the bar high for glamorus occasion wear. With each delightful collection that she presents, I wish more and more for fabulous affairs worthy of her gowns to be in my future.
