Now Trending: The 90s – White Tee Under Slip Dress

Oh, the 90s. It’s hard to believe that just two decades ago press-on nails were a thing, Sun-In spray was how you got your hair to have ‘natural’ looking highlights, wearing glittery lotion was cool, and a pacifier necklace was socially acceptable. What were we thinking? It was also the time when the World Wide Web was in its infancy. So, like, how did we get all of our information and, more importantly, fashion inspiration?

For the most part, fashion inspiration in the 90s was pieced together from musical genres like grunge, rave, and hip-hop, as well as movies like Pretty Woman, Pulp Fiction, and Clueless. During this decade, Alicia Silverstone strongly influenced the fashion choices of nearly every teenage girl (and maybe even gave a hormonal spike to all of America when she took part in Aerosmith’s music video for the song “Crazy” with Liv Tyler – watch the video, here).

For this white tee under dress look (top, here; dress, here), I took cues from the above-mentioned 90s pop-culture princess. Although she would have probably worn a daisy print dress (here), choker (here), and headband (here), I kept it simple. The outfit below consists of the basics elements required for the 90s-inspired layering game.

To go all in on this trend, just add a long sleeve, flannel button-up around your waist (here) and toss on a jean jacket (here). You could even swap out the embroidered bag (another trend this fall) for a backpack (here). Just make sure to wear it only over one shoulder. BTW – if you’re curious about my favorite songs and movies from the 90s, scroll down to the very bottom of the page for my lists.
