How to Start Mixing in Spring’s Paper Bag Pants

OK, I know that I just talked about snow day essentials but it’s never too early to start planning for the glorious return of spring. Amiright?!

Year after year, I’ve seen the oddly named ‘paper bag pants’ pop in and out of editorials and major retailers. During each of these moments in the sun, I’ve welcomed the loose fitting, waist-cinching silhouette into my wardrobe and have even made room for a few skirts with the high-waisted ruffles (here). I’m drawn to the not-for-your-lunch paper bag style because when worn properly the silhouette can be flattering to your waistline. Plus, as we all know how hard it is to find a flattering-yet-comfortable pair of pants, working in a few pair of these baggy babes into the rotation just seems like a no-brainer (especially when you can get them for a steal from one of my favorite online retailers, Asos!).

So to jump ahead in seasons and start enjoying these pants with on-trend ruffle detail now, I’ve been pairing them with warmth-giving wool sweaters that cling snug to the body. That’s the key to this presumably tricky-to-style silhouette, it must be balanced with a top that is either fitted (thick sweaters for now) or cropped (lightweight crop-tops in the spring).

Below, you can see, how I’ve started mixing in spring’s ‘it’ silhouette now. You’ll also find some of my favorite paper bag styles that are available in a variety of prices (these are less than $60!).

Outfit details: Sweater, Isabel Marant (last year; find deals on her pieces here) // Paper Bag Pants, Asos // Beret, Club Monaco // Longline Coat, Intermix (last year; other Intermix exclusives here and here) // Booties, Saint Laurent // Sunglasses, Celine
