We’re all well aware of the love that designers declared for the shoulder last summer. From completely bare to cut-outs that let the shoulder catch a breeze, summer tops were all about letting this broad sweep of skin get kissed by the sun. But what does this mean for the fall?
Well, as temperatures cool-off during these coming months, shoulders will not lose their prominence. In fact, they’re set to gain even more significance! During this new season, shoulders will again be making some bold statements, though this time via layers of voluminous detailing. You can expect to see the shoulder exaggerated, padded, and puffed (like in this top by Free People). This dramatic flair is reminiscent of the 80s, which was all about color, size, and experimentation. To be honest, I’m not upset about it at all. I was made in the 80s (girl, you know it’s true… sorry, I couldn’t resist a Milly Vanilli reference). Anyway, this return to excess excites the adventurous side of me!
Below, you can see more of this outfit that I wore during New York Fashion Week. The look embraces the 80s shoulder puff, yet softly subdues the sometimes loud trend using a classic black and white color combination. My advice to you for the fall: don’t be afraid to dabble in excess or to be a bit extra.
