Trend Report: Fall/Winter, Footwear

In the first trend report on fall/winter fashion, step one in the wardrobe transition was covered (you read volume 01, right?). In this previous report, I shared styling tips for adding skirts of different lengths and textures to your existing wardrobe – an easy way to refresh and also prepare for the cooler weather to come. So, next, I will share what shoe styles should be peeping out from underneath those hemlines. Who doesn’t love shoes, right?!

As we all watched to see which of the f/w fashion trend predictions were actually picked-up by the fashion elite who attended the New York Fashion Week SS16 shows, I gave special attention to footwear. What I saw was this:

  • Daytime street styles are all about comfortable footwear
  • Pointed-toe and lace-up flats are the new ballerina flat
  • The 90s patent leather look makes a return
  • The ankle boot is still every city girl’s best friend (yet some styles now come up a little higher on the leg thanks to the 70s inspiration)
  • The over-the-knee boot is now widely acceptable and should be worn in suede
  • The statement heel is the ultimate form of expression (hello, lucite)

So, take a look at these top fall footwear trends from the NYFW SS16 streets, as well as handpicked pairs worth adding to your closet. As always, click on the image to be redirected for more product details and to shop the style.

Casual

The majority of us fashion folks have come to our senses and now adorn our feet with shoes made for comfort during the day. Pointed-toe flats are an excellent staple item – although it’s now about mixing in pairs with embellishments or that lace-up. Casual menswear-inspired footwear like loafers are big. The Oxford and “sock shoe” bring more comfortable, yet cool, options. And, finally, the street style sneaker is also huge (try a pair of Adidas, like above, or the suede hightop version of one of your favorite brands).

Boots

In most cities where you have to walk for miles to get anything accomplished, the ankle boot becomes your BFF. It protects your feet from nasty city sludge, pairs well with almost everything and can easily transition into the evening. Therefore, it’s no surprise that this trusted wardrobe staple isn’t going anywhere. Still, every year, there are new styles that can update your look (think 90s patent leather, lucite heels and lace-up). While 70s-inspiration takes the ankle boot up your leg an inch or two, the over-the-knee boot comes back in style and in a big way (note: suede is the texture du jour).

The Statement Heel

Statement necklaces are so 2014; the heel is the new place to express your style in a bold way. A pop of color, a splash of texture, a leg-wrap of laces, a block lucite heel or the unexpected dramatic embellishment can add that final touch to an evening outfit. Here are a few pair that I’m currently crushing on.
