How to Create a Modern Fourth of July Look

How to Create a Modern Fourth of July Look

I absolutely love a stylish star print, but not for occasions when it’s going to be super cliché. Aside from a themed barbecue or a raging Vegas pool party, your attire for celebrating the independence of our country does haven’t to mirror a Budweiser commercial.

Besides, your closet might already be filled with the makings of an elevated outfit for America’s birthday. I’m sure you have stripes, navy and a pop of red somewhere tucked away, so pull them out for a game of mix and match. You see, I recently wrote about tossing out your traditional ways of thinking when it comes to modern styling (read here). So, here’s another chance for you to flex your creativity.

For my July 4th look, I knew I wanted to use the striped crop top (here) that I recently wore with trousers for a nautical-inspired look (here). But I wasn’t sure how I would switch up the bottoms. I started with button-front mustard shorts (here) and then moved on to a pair of tan D-ring pants (here). Both looks felt sophisticated and I was thinking of doing a pop of red with my pearl detailing shoes (here). Suddenly, it struck me.

Why not try a pairing with the floral maxi skirt that I’ve been living in (here)? Its flowy movement is awesome for having a moment in the wind, and since I’ll be outdoors it’s a major win. Plus, because it’s a print, I can eat all the dips, snacks, and hamburgers that I want without my food baby stealing the show. That’s a tip that I learned a while ago because this thin gal can eat like a 250-pound man.

So, my advice here is to skip the kitschy July 4th wardrobe purchase and go with something that you can wear again IRL. Pull all of your American-colored print and pattern pieces, then break the rules by mixing and matching them together. Below, you can see more of this modern take on dressing in red, white and blue to celebrate our freedom.
