Next Level Mexican Food is The Latest Culinary Trend

“I don’t like Mexican food,” said no one ever!

Mexican food has always been a fun and flavorful crowd pleaser, so it is no wonder why we’ve seen more and more restaurants offering south-of-the-border cuisine springing up over the past couple of years. However, these newcomers are forgoing the cheeky piñata approach, and instead creating a movement to elevate this category. While concepts vary from coast to coast, chefs at current Mexican restaurants tend to focus more on using local or organic ingredients, and are honing in on robust, authentic flavors or technical cooking skills.

Having checked out some of these new players, here is a round up of some pretty awesome south-of-the-border eats found in Los Angeles, New York, and Miami.

New York:

Cosme (Flatiron)

Leading the initiative to elevate Mexican cuisine into the high-end category is Enrique Olvera, Cosme’s world-renown chef from Mexico City. Using local ingredients, his elegant share plates are the talk of the town. Manhattanites clamor to get a seat, and reservations are booked weeks in advance. You won’t find traditional dishes here. Instead, exceptionally prepared and colorful plates are offered. We enjoyed the consistent flow of homemade tortillas as well as the Sliced Raw Hamachi, King Crab, Scallop Aguachile, Ayacote Bean Salad, Purple Asparagus, Crispy Octopus, Duck Carnitas and the Corn Husk Meringue. Note: their wine list is extraordinary! 35 E 21st; (212) 913-9659l; www.cosmenyc.com

Tacombi (Nolita)

Although Tacombi has been open for a few years now, the buzz is still strong. In contrast to the above, this casual Yúcatan beach-style eatery focuses more on familiar dishes with genuine Mexican flavor and does not take reservations. The feel is more of a neighborhood taqueria – you will think you have traveled to Mexico for the real deal after biting into one of their tacos. They offer several taco fillings and even serve breakfast variations. The Esquites, a traditional dish made of corn, lime, and chipotle mayo, is so good that you’ll be dreaming about it the next day. 267 Elizabeth St.; (917) 727-0179: www.tacombi.com

Miami:

Bodega Taqueria y Tequila (South Beach)

With a food truck inspired menu and theme, Bodega Taqueria y Tequila is an excellent way to either start or end a SoBe evening. Both the street food fare and the cocktails pack a flavor punch. And, if you’re in need of some late-night debauchery, just step thru the porta-pottie door and into the hidden bar in the back. 1220 16th St., Miami Beach; 305.704.2145; www.bodegasouthbeach.com

Los Angeles:

Gracious Madre (West Hollywood)

Described as meatless Mexican fare – all vegan & organic – you may think the flavor is compromised, but that is far from the truth at Gracious Madre. The menu is full of delicious options, including Tostadas, Gorditas, Sopes, Enchiladas, Tacos and more. Guests that are not a vegan or vegetarian will still be satisfied, as portions are good-sized with robust flavor. The staff is friendly, and the food comes out fairly fast. The chic space is great for catching up with friends or celebrating, as they can accommodate large parties and have an unique tequila and drink menu8905 Melrose Ave; (323) 978-2170; www.graciasmadreweho.com

Toca Madera (West Hollywood)

Toca Madera is a total hot-spot. The edgy decor, beautiful staff, and loud house music illustrates this upon entry. They offer organic eats, and there is a separate menu for vegetarians. The plates are small, so sharing is recommended. We enjoyed the Guacamole, Salsa Flight, Sweet Corn Tamales, Seared Calamari, Achiote Chicken Chopped Salad, Cochinita Pibil, Crispy Short Rib Tacos, and the Churro Ice Cream Sandwich. If you can make your way up to the bar after, stick around to try a Seasonal Agua Fresca, which is charred pineapple & cinnamon-infused ketel one, lemon, & coconut water. 8450 W 3rd St; (323) 852-9400; www.tocamadera.com
